Tunnels and Trolls was the second roleplaying game ever published. Tunnels & Trolls appeared in 1975, hoping to gain fans as a more accessible game than Dungeons & Dragons, which was released in 1974. Written by Ken St. Andre and published by Flying Buffalo, the T&T RPG never gained a following like its more famous predecessor, but its publisher remains active to this day. Tunnels and Trolls is in its 7th edition these days, while there have been multiple published adventuresproduced for the game over the years.
The Tunnels & Trolls RPG was published in England, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Japan by Corgi Press out of the United Kingdom. The game actually hit stores in Western Europe before Dungeons & Dragons, which might explain why T&T was more popular abroad than in the states. One reason for the continuation of Tunnels & Trolls over the years is its ability to handle solo adventures and play-by-email games well.
Tunnels and Trolls 5th Edition
The 5th Edition of the Tunnels & Trolls RPG was published in 1991 by Flying Buffalo. I’ve seen a brand new copy of this game selling on Amazon for $90, but a used copy of Tunnels & Trolls 5th Edition is virtually worthless.
The Naked Doom module was the fourth solo adventure written for Tunnels and Trolls. This adventure was written by Ken St. Andre and published in 1977 by Flying Buffalo. Naked Doom sells for $16 on eBay.
The Island of Darksmoke
The Island of Darksmoke is a GMs adventure in the fabled land of Zind. The Island of Darksmoke was published by Flying Buffalo and sells for $24 on eBay.
In Monsters! Monsters!, a spinoff game of Tunnels and Trolls module, player characters play the monsters instead of the heroes. This shows how early on RPG writers were willing to poke fun at themselves and turn the genre on its ear. Monsters Monsters! was written by Ken St. Andre and published by Flying Buffalo. The Monster! Monsters! book sells for around $12 on eBay.
Rat on a Stick
Rat on a Stock is a thirty-two page 1982 adventure from Judges Guild, with ten dungeon levels. A new copy of this book sells on Amazon for around $15.
Tunnels & Trolls 7.5: Delver’s Pack
The Delver’s Pack is an 80-page expansion which contains the adventure “Hunting Party”, the solo adventure “TERRoR”, and an expanded bestiary. The Delver’s Pack was published by Fiery Dragon Productions in 2009 and sells for around $21 on eBay.
Editions of Tunnels and Trolls
I wanted to give one final note on the different editions of Tunnels and Trolls. The 1st through 5th editions were published by Flying Buffalo from 1975 to 1991, with a 5.5 edition later offered by Ken St. Andre. The designation “sixth edition” is reserved for a series of fan-written rules posted on the Internet under that name. When it came time for a new edition in the 21st century, Flying Buffalo decided to market the new books as a 7th Edition of Tunnels & Trolls, to avoid confusion with the online rules. So if you seek to buy every edition of Tunnels & Trolls, this is why the 6th edition is impossible to find.
In other words, even if you TRY to buy Tunnels and Trolls Sixth Edition, you’ll never be able to.
